The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Ray Chen

Vasily Petrenko, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and violinist Ray Chen are coming to China

Founded in 1946 by Sir Thomas Beecham, The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was given the title ‘Royal’ by the Queen in 1966, confirming its irreplaceable position in the British music world.

Throughout its history, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra has attracted and collaborated with some of the most inspirational artists, including Rudolf Kempe, Antal Doráti, Walter Weller, André Previn, Vladimir Ashkenazy, and many others. Vladimir Ashkenazy, Yuri Temirkanov and Daniele Gatti have all been Principal Conductors of the Orchestra, and in August 2021, Vasily Petrenko became the new Music Director. This is a landmark appointment in the history of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Vasily Petrenko’s first two seasons with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra have been well received by audiences and critics alike.

Vasily Petrenko is Music Director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (since 2021), and ChiefConductor of the European Union Youth Orchestra (since 2015). He is Conductor Laureate of theRoyal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, following his hugely acclaimed fifteen year tenure astheir Chief Conductor from 2006-2021, and has also served as Principal Guest Conductor andsubsequently Artistic Director of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia (2016-2022),Chief Conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra (2013-2020), Principal Conductor of theNational Youth Orchestra of Great Britain(2009–2013), andPrincipal Guest Conductor of StPetersburg’s Mikhailovsky Theatre, where he began his career as Resident Conductor (1994–1997).

Violinist Ray Chen initially came to audiences through first prizes in the Yehudi Menuhin (2008) and Queen Elizabeth (2009) competitions, and has since risen to prominence in Europe, Asia, and the United States, as well as in his native Australia, where he signed a contract in 2017 with Decca Classics, the classical label of the Universal Music Group. In 2017, he signed with Decca Classics, the classical music label of Universal Music Group, and in the summer of 2017 recorded his first album with the London Philharmonic Orchestra as a continuation of his three critically acclaimed previous releases on Sony, the first of which, Virtuoso, won the German Classical Echo Award. He has been named “One to Watch” by leading international classical music magazines The Strad and Gramophone, named one of Forbes’ 30 Most Influential People in Asia Under 30, and has performed at major events such as France’s National Day, broadcast live to 800,000 people, as well as the Stockholm Nobel Prize Concert and BBC Proms, both of which were broadcast to the whole of Europe.
