Tony Shen is an outstanding young (born in 1997) clarinetist who has been widely acclaimed in China and around the world.
As an undergraduate, he entered the Curtis Institute of Music with full prizes and studied with renowned performers Ricardo Morales (Principal Clarinet of the Philadelphia Orchestra), Anthony McGill (Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra), and Michael Rusinek. Among other things, Ricardo Morales said of Tony Shen, “Of all my students, when I look at Tony it’s as if I see myself as a child.”
In 2021, he was admitted to the Yale School of Music with full honors to continue his studies in the Master of Music program with David Schifrin, and served as Yale’s undergraduate clarinet instructor during his time there. According to David Schifrin, “Tony is an exceptionally talented clarinetist with a beautiful tone, a highly expressive performance style, and marvelous virtuosity.” In May 2024, he successfully graduated from the Yale School of Music with a Master of Music and Master of Fine Arts in Music double major.
In 2024, Tony Shen was admitted to the University of Michigan with the world’s first full prize in his major, and will continue his studies for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, this August.

At the age of 17, he was invited to participate in a China tour with conductor Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, taking the stage of the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) together and performing together again at the opening of the Changsha Concert Hall in 2016.
He has also toured with the Russian National Symphony Orchestra, the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra, the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra, the Neukölln Philharmonic Orchestra, the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, and numerous domestic symphony orchestras, and he regularly performs with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra as Acting Assistant Principal.
From 2013-2022, Tony Shen has received extensive attention from international and domestic juries in several competitions and has won several awards: 3rd Prize in the Junior Division of the 2013 Vladivostok International Competition in Russia, 1st Prize in the 2016 Asian Wind Competition, 3rd Prize in the 2017 Bend Derlin Emerging Artist Competition, and 2nd Prize in the 2021 Top of the King International Classical Competition in the United States, Second Prize in 2022 American Players International Music Competition, etc. Meanwhile, he was invited to complete a performance at New York's Carnegie Hall in the summer of 2023.
Tony Shen's solo debut album, Sound of Imagination, was released on November 15, 2023 as the first recording on the National Center for the Performing Arts' NCPA Classics label. The album, featuring Tony Shen on clarinet and An Tianxu on piano, was recorded in August 2023 at the NCPA studios in China.
